Summary: The body of a student found in the Oxford canal quickly becomes a puzzle for Detective Inspector Morse and Sergeant Lewis. Geoffrey Stanfield was a quiet, studious, postgrad student with no real enemies, flaws or even bad habits. Why was he killed and his room burgled? Were the overheard arguments with an unknown student tied into his death and what is the significance of the books stolen from his room? Who was his girlfriend Annie and why has she also gone missing? With a postmortem providing almost as many questions as answers, Morse and Lewis will have their work cut out unraveling the clues and trying to understand why such an unassuming young man was killed and by whom.
