Hello, everyone! I can't believe that we're nearing September 1st already (just four days away – I don’t know if time got away from you like it did me!) and that we'll be starting our TWELFTH round of Small Fandoms Bang! I wanted to let everyone know for sure that we're a go this year, and reiterate the most important dates for the next couple of months:

Sept 1: Author Sign-Ups Open
Nov 1: Artist Sign-Ups Open (And First Author Check-In)

Participation on DW: A reminder that, even though we’re running this challenge exclusively on DW now, you don’t need to have a DW account to participate here. We currently encourage people to participate from many different platforms using OpenID and that will continue. If you don't have a DW account you may still comment to the sign-up post(s), check-in posts, etc and also post your fic/art announcements to the community with OpenID. So whether you participate from LJ or Tumblr or someplace else, you are still welcome and able to play in this small fandom sandbox, and I sincerely and wholeheartedly hope that you will continue to do so.

Something I learned in a previous round is that, while you can ‘participate’ in a community with OpenID (ie, comment to entries), you CANNOT post to the community. You are still welcome to participate, just know that you will need to have someone else post your fic/art submission on your behalf when that time comes. I am happy to do so, but you may also ask your author/artist counterpart to do so. I’m very sorry for this hiccup.

If you have any comments about the last round, or questions/suggestions for the coming round, please feel free to leave them in a reply to this post. (Comments will be screened.)

If you'd like to pimp us out before we go live, just c&p the text from the textbox to share this banner:

Please let me know if you are available to help out with the support comm, [community profile] smallfandomcafe.

I'm always up for new/fresh topics for the Hump Day! Posts and also looking for someone to post either the Hump Day! or Saturday Snippet entries. Even if it's just occasionally.

Thank you!

Hey, folks! Sorry for my silence.

1. Artist sign-ups will open next Sunday, November 1.

1b. Ooops! Forgot to mention that the first author check-in will also go up on November 1.

2. Author sign-ups will remain open through November 30 due to me being an absentee mod.

3. I'm looking for assistance coming up with new/fresh topics for the Hump!Day posts at our support comm, [community profile] smallfandomcafe.

4. I'm also looking for anyone who would like to help out with the support commm.

You may comment here (comments will be screened) with ideas or to ask for more information, or e-mail me at sfbbmod@gmail.com. (Please do not PM the mod account.)

Thank you!

Hello, everyone! I will be going away for the weekend (Sat-Mon) and will be unavailable for the most part. There will be wifi, but I'm not lugging my laptop with me. I think it's too early in the challenge for any emergencies to crop up, but I will have my phone with me to deal with those. Anything else (sign-ups, requests to qualify fandoms, general questions, etc) that is posted from late Friday afternoon through Monday will be dealt with on Tuesday after my return. Thank you for your understanding.

1. Due to a recent incident at the FAQ I’ve turned off anon commenting at this community. From here forward you must have a DW account (or be using OpenID) in order to comment here. (Basically, if you’re going to come here and make personal attacks, you’ll need to put your name to it.) I'm sorry that one individual has ruined things for the rest of the anon commenters, who have normally been nothing but considerate, and I apologize for any inconvenience this causes anyone else.

2. I’m making an addition to the FAQ and I’m hoping to get your help on the wording. Back story: I was asked if I’d allow an author to decline certain types of art. My original answer was a straight ‘no’, for various reasons, but upon further discussion, I’ve realized that there might be instances when a person could not enjoy certain types of art. For example, a person who has a hearing impairment receiving a fanmix.

As a generally able-bodied person myself, I wanted input so the language I use isn’t insulting or improper, which is why I’m asking for your input. Here is a draft of the additional language:

May an author decline certain types of art?
Generally speaking, no. Because this is a multi-fandom/small fandom challenge we have enough of a struggle to make sure we have enough artists to claim all the fic without allowing authors to decline certain types of art ‘just because’. That said, I will allow an exception for certain cases with good reason, such a person who has a hearing impairment declining to receive a fanmix. There will be no requirement that you must explain to me why you need to decline a certain type of fanwork, but if I discover that anyone has misused this allowance, they will be banned from participating in any future rounds.

(Also, please let me know if you think there should be any other changes. I'd rather find out now that it's too vague, or whatever, than when it becomes an issue later on. *g*)

Thank you all for your assistance and understanding.

Hello, everyone! I can't believe that we're nearing September 1st already (just over two weeks away!) and that we'll be starting our NINTH round of Small Fandoms Bang! I wanted to let everyone know for sure that we're a go this year, and reiterate the most important dates for the next couple of months:

Sept 1: Author Sign-Ups Open
Nov 1: Artist Sign-Ups Open (And First Author Check-In)

Move to DW: To make things easier for the mods we will be moving the SFBB to our DW community exclusively when this next round opens. This does not mean that you can only participate if you have a DW account. We currently encourage people to participate from many different platforms using OpenID and that will continue.

To be clear: If you don't have a DW account you may comment to the sign-up post(s), check-in posts, etc and also post your fic/art announcements to the community with OpenID. So whether you participate from LJ or Tumblr or someplace else, you are still welcome and able to play in this small fandom sandbox, and I sincerely and wholeheartedly hope that you will continue to do so.

I have spent the last hour or so creating a support comm on DW and importing the LJ comm over. I have sent invites to the artists I know are participating via DW. If you didn't receive an invite to the LJ or DW support comm, please let me know.

Thank you!

Whew! There are a lot of things are happening simultaneously today! If you missed a post on your f-list, here’s the round-up:

1. Author Sign-Ups are closed and it is time for our first check in. Author Check-In no. 1 can be found here: on LJ | on DW. [If you can’t see the post you’ll need to join the community.]

2. Artist Sign-Ups are now open here: on LJ | on DW!

3. November 1st falls on a Wednesday this year, so our first Hump Day! Post is up at the support comm. Head on over to meet your fellow authors at the Author Meet & Greet!

Additional Items:

4. Invitations to the support comm, [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomcafe have been sent out to all authors who have signed up. The invitations will only remain open for 30 days, so please accept your invite before it expires. (Please note that you will not receive an e-mail notification of the invite unless you have adjusted your LJ settings to request one. If you have not received an e-mail notification, you should check your My Invites page under the Communities menu to accept the invitation.)

5. There has been an issue with joining the support comm using OpenID. I don’t know if LJ is having a brain fart right now, or if it’s something else. If there is anyone who routinely uses OpenID who might be able to help us out, I’d appreciate it. Thank you!

6. Lastly, a reminder to please e-mail the mod account if you need to contact me for any reason. Please do not PM the mod account on LJ or DW, especially if you want me to see your comment right away. I need to sign out of my personal account and sign into the mod account in order to view the PM, which is a bit of a hassle on my phone so I generally wait until I get home and can do so on my computer. Plus it’s easier to keep a ‘paper’ trail of our conversation when it takes place via e-mail. So please, e-mail me at sfbbmod @ gmail.com if you have any questions or comments. Thank you!

Hello, everyone! The Author Sign-Up form goes live tomorrow and I wanted to let you know about one change I've made to it. From my experience signing up for other challenges I've realized there's an option to send the person filling out the form a copy of their information, so I have enabled that option so everyone has a access to the fandoms they've signed up with in case they need a reminder or need to change their fandom.

In order for that to happen I had to set the form to 'collect e-mail addresses', which is something I can't edit. So that you didn't have to submit your e-mail address twice I deleted the original e-mail item, and now you'll be asked for you e-mail before your LJ username.

It's a little thing, but I didn't want anyone to look at the form and wonder what the heck was going on.

See you all tomorrow!

This community was created as a mirror community to [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang on LiveJournal. As of Round 9 (opening September 1, 2019) the Small Fandoms Bang challenge will be run out of this DW community solely.

The schedule for the current/next round can be found on the community profile and the FAQ.

If you don't have a DW account you may comment to the sign-up post(s), check-in posts, etc and also post your fic/art announcements to the comm (we'll work with you on that!) with OpenID. So whether you participate from LJ or Tumblr or someplace else, you are still welcome and able to play in this small fandom sandbox, and I sincerely and wholeheartedly hope that those of you who have played in the past will continue to do so, and those of you who are just finding us will come on over and join in the fun.

If you have any questions you may ask them here or contact me at the mod account, sfbbmod @ gmail.com.

If you moderate a small fandom community, or a multi-fandom community that includes small fandoms, and would like to affiliate, please comment HERE.

The master lists for each round can be found HERE and our support comm is located at [community profile] smallfandomcafe. All other important links can be found in the links section.

Due to recent events on LiveJournal, I have imported this community to the already-existing mirror comm Small Fandoms Bang on DW.

If you already have an account on DW and you have claimed your OpenID account, your DW name will automatically appear on the posts attributable to you. If you have not yet claimed your OpenID account, you may do so here.

The current plan is that, beginning with our next round, Small Fandoms Bang will be run on both LJ and DW. I will make admin posts to LJ and do an import so the posts also show up on the DW comm within a few minutes (hopefully!). When it comes time to post your fic/art announcements, you may do so at either community (though you should only post to one or the other, not both). I will set up an RSS feed so that anyone who does not have a DW account but wants to follow the comm on DW so they can see all the fic/art announcements posted there may do so. A final import will be made at the end of each round.

Please note that this plan is subject to change, depending on what happens with LJ between now and Sept 1.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please comment here with them.

Thank you.

Dear Everyone,

Today’s challenge at Fandom Snowflake is to send feedback to someone, with an emphasis this year on “the people who run challenges and exchanges, moderate communities, give us spaces to chat and bring us together.” While doing that I realized that this community would not still be here today without all of you. The fact that a multi-fandom, small fandom big bang has continued for six rounds when so many others fold after one or two, is a testament to everyone who signs up here as an author, or an artist, or a cheerleader/beta. So, thank you. I hope you all know how much I appreciate you, and the fact that you choose to participate here. *hugs*

Hello, everyone! Just a reminder, if you need to contact the mod you may do so in a reply to the appropriate post OR by e-mailing me at the mod account, sfbbmod @ gmail.com. Please do not PM me. E-mail conversations are easier to keep track of, and I can't read your PM, much less reply to you, without logging into the mod account, so if I'm on my phone when I see your PM come in, we're both SOL.

Thank you.

Arrgh! I've received a Jury Summons for the week of March 28th. Of freaking course! Which means I may have very limited availability during the week that final drafts are due and the posting date claims post goes up. *head desk* Best case scenario, I don't have to go in at all. Worst case, I'm there all week. In any case, I will do my very best to keep things running smoothly here, but I wanted you all to know just in case I'm unable to get back to you immediately during that week. I'll update you once I know if I have to go in at all. Keep your fingers crossed!

Before the next round begins, I wanted to let everyone know that we will be instituting a new disqualification rule with regard to authors/artists who drop out of Small Fandoms Bang without letting anyone know.

We’ve had an issue with both authors and artists signing up to participate and then disappearing without a word since the beginning of time this challenge. It’s the kind of thing that happens with these sorts of comms, but it’s also kind of a pain, to be honest, and it sucks when it leaves me scrambling for a pinch hit artist or an author doesn’t get artwork at all because their artist bailed without letting them or the mod know they needed to withdraw from the challenge.

Let me emphasize that there is NO PENALTY for WITHDRAWING so long as you contact me to let me know that you have to withdraw. Real life happens. We all get that.

However, for those authors/artists who henceforth disappear without a word1, there will be a penalty imposed:

~Your first infraction means that you will not be eligible for the next round.
~Your second infraction means that you will not be eligible for any further rounds (ie, you’ll be banned from participating altogether).

From here on out, that’s it; you get two chances.

1 There will be an exception for those authors/artists who do have a very good reason for not being in contact. That means it very well might take a note from your doctor or parents.

Thank you.

Author sign-ups for Round 4 will open on September 1 as promised!

Artist sign-ups will open on November 1.

(As you may recall, artist sign-ups opened on the same day as author sign-ups during rounds one and two, but we had a lot of artist attrition those rounds. After getting some feedback from you all, I tried a different tack last round by opening artist sign-ups on January 1 (concurrent with the final author check-in before rough drafts were due) so that artists had an idea what fandoms were being written. As the handful of authors who didn’t receive art last round can attest, that method was a pretty big failure.

This round I’m trying something different yet again, based on the same feedback. Hopefully this will address both concerns mentioned most frequently. By opening artist sign-ups on November 1 we shorten the time period between sign-up and claims by 2 months (yet still give artists plenty of time to sign up). Also, artists will have some idea of what fandoms are being written in because the sign-up post will be concurrent with the first author check-in. Let’s all cross our fingers that this method is more successful than the last. *g*)

If you have any comments or questions about this round, please reply to this post with them. Thank you!

Round 3 is scheduled to open for sign-ups on September 1, but before we go live for this round I wanted to ask for suggestions regarding an issue that has plagued us in both of the previous rounds, namely The Case of the Disappearing Artists.

In the past, Artist Sign-ups have opened the same day as Author Sign-ups, even though artists only have to hang around for up to five months before they can claim and then get on with creating their artwork. We inevitably lose a large number of artists who either forget they’ve signed up, or have had RL issues come up in the meantime, or have changed their mind, or for whatever reason.

My question is to all of you, but most importantly the artists who have signed up here in the past, or who have participated in other big bangs. What can I do to change, or limit, this phenomenon of the Disappearing Artists? Would it help to open artist sign-ups later than author sign-ups?

Any suggestions on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
